Not really New Years Resolutions Three years ago tomorrow I started the 101 Things In 1001 Days challenge, finishing it last October. It was a lot of fun and an interesting exercise. On the other hand, 1001 days is a long time to keep the motivation going, so I thought I'd do a less long-term project.
I'm also becoming very aware that this November I will have a 'significant birthday'. Not that this means all that much really, but it's a nice excuse for a target (and possibly a party!). So, my personal challenge for this year will be Things To Do Before You're Forty.
Any suggestions for things to put on the list? (Bear in mind I only have ten and a half months, if you were going to suggest things that take ages to plan/do). I shall post a provisional list of things to do tomorrow (Twelfth Night) since that's the date I started the 101 Things list when I get round to it.

Who wants to 'fess up? I have a mystery present! On the 23rd a big box arrived in the post addressed to me. It had a Lush sticker on the outside, so, being pretty sure I hadn't ordered anything from Lush, I guessed it was a present and left it to open yesterday.
Inside there are lots and lots of wonderful Lush goodies, but no delivery note saying who it's from! I am obviously insanely grateful, but I'm not sure who to! It's not any of the people who I've spoken to in the last two days, unless they're far better liars that I give them credit for.
So, would anyone like to confess and claim the credit?

Oh, go on then, I'll join in. Baaaa.
On the twelfth day of Christmas, darth_tigger sent to me... Twelve bohemiancoasts drumming Eleven dougs piping Ten crafts a-leaping Nine conventions dancing Eight poohsticks a-knitting Seven books a-running Six musicals a-reading Five ba-a-a-adgers Four suburbankinks Three douglas adams Two sf cons ...and a synaesthesia in a ravelry.
I don't think I'd have posted it if it hadn't come up with Five ba-a-a-adgers!

Cultural references Every now and again I'll make a reference to something - a song, a book, a poem - that I think is widely known, and get given a blank 'what are you on about?' stare. I'm now wondering if my junior school/parents/TV programmes I watched as a kid went on about really obscure things or if the stuff I refer to is actually as well known as I'd thought.
So, if you said "look, some little boxes" and I said "are they made of ticky-tacky?" would you: a) know what I was on about b) not know what I was on about but assume it was a song or a book or a poem or something c) think I was mad?

Gratuitous showing off post I have socks!
Two socks!
That's a whole pair of socks!
And I knitted them! All by myself!
This involved a desperate rush to finish them on Wednesday so I could wear them when I went out for birthday drinks. Which I did, and I'm so very proud.
Socks!

Top Secret I'm sure that anyone who's ever seen the somewhat underrated flawed gem of a film Top Secret will remember the backwards Swedish Bookstore Scene with Peter Cushing*

101 things in 1001 days - extended mix OK, as mentioned in my last post, I'm setting myself a new, more short-term challenge. The challenge is to complete as many more of the original 101 challenges as are still possible before my next birthday.*
Some have been amended to take into account the time scale - for example instead of having to go running another forty-nine times to make it up to 143, I'm making it five times, to be in line with the original challenge of "on average once a week". *This isn't just a gratuitous excuse to keep mentioning my birthday, honest. It's just I thought I'd make my next list-of-things-to-do challenge run from birthday to birthday, since next year I'm going to hit a significant number.
( Things to do before November 18th )
So there's 30 things to do. I'd better go and get on with them...

101 Things In 1001 Days Over a thousand days ago I started this meme. As the title suggests, the idea was to come up with a list of 101 things and attempt to do them within 1001 days. The list grew as time went on - there were only about thirty things on it when I started, and I only filled the list about a month ago.
So how did I do on my 101 things?

101 things in 1001 days Some months ago various people started this meme. I never got round to it at the time, but the very lovely ang_grrr reminded me of it the other day, and I thought I'd start it in lieu of New Year Resolutions (which I don't generally bother doing).
This is being posted on 06/01/07 (Twelfth Night seemed a good time to post) but dated for 1001 days time (03/10/09), both so I can easily refer to it when I want to do an update on progress (if any) and so I can easily see the time limit. I don't yet have 101 things on the list, but hopefully this will be added to. Please feel free to offer suggestions for other things.
Edit: Time up! Stop writing and put your pens down. Hand papers in for marking.

Counties of England Updating my 101 things in 1001 days challenge earlier, it occurred to me I should put up posts tracking the more gradual tick-off-on-a-list ones. So, post-dated to the end of the challenge, this is my list of counties visited and to be visited. So far I'm restricting myself to counties visited since the beginning of the challenge, but this might change nearer the end as I get desperate!
( Counties of England )
My geography's pretty terrible, so if anyone thinks I've been to any of these counties since 06/01/07 please let me know!

Can I have new legs please? My legs feel like someone has taken a hammer to them. Apart from my knees, which feel like someone's prising the kneecaps off with a crowbar.
This could have something to do with the Robin Hood Half Marathon yesterday. 13.1 miles, which I managed in two hours fifteen-and-a-bit minutes. reverendjim was lazy - since he can't be bothered to run for more than two hours, he finished it in one hour fifty-and-a-bit minutes. Slacker.
To add insult to injury, my race pack for another half marathon, Run To The Beat in two weeks time, arrived in the post this morning. Bastards.

101 things in 1001 days - update Three weeks to go to the end of my 101 things in 101 days project. That's nearly three years I've been sort-of working on this. So, how is it going? Is there time for a last-minute attempt to finish off a few? How many have I managed so far?

Brilliant tattoo idea This morning I was chatting to one of the instructors at the gym, who'd come in to teach Spin. He's a lovely lovely chap, and camp as a row of little pink tents. I noticed he had a tattoo of a bar code on his upper arm, and asked about it.
Apparently it's the bar code from a bar of soap. So if he gets it scanned, it will say Fairy.
This made me laugh for a long time.

Postman Cat I was just listening to an old episode of The Unbelievable Truth, where the panellists have to talk cobblers on a specific subject and try to include some actual true facts without the other panellists spotting them. One such allegedly true fact was that in the nineteenth century in Belgium cats were employed to deliver letters, until it was discovered that they lacked the discipline for work in the postal service.

Run To The Beat On Sunday 27th September I am planning to run a half marathon in London. (This is a fortnight after running one in Nottingham. I must be mad. There's a definite chance I won't be capable of running by the second one).
My current vague plan is to travel to London the day before, stay somewhere and then get up early to run on the Sunday. I need to be at the O2 by 9am on the day itself, or at Waterloo Pier for 8am to get their high speed river service.
( A plea for local information... )
