101 things in 1001 days
Some months ago various people started this meme. I never got round to it at the time, but the very lovely [info]ang_grrr   reminded me of it the other day, and I thought I'd start it in lieu of New Year Resolutions (which I don't generally bother doing).

This is being posted on 06/01/07 (Twelfth Night seemed a good time to post) but dated for 1001 days time (03/10/09), both so I can easily refer to it when I want to do an update on progress (if any) and so I can easily see the time limit. I don't yet have 101 things on the list, but hopefully this will be added to. Please feel free to offer suggestions for other things.

Last updated 09/07/09 (week 131).

Counties of England
Updating my 101 things in 1001 days challenge earlier, it occurred to me I should put up posts tracking the more gradual tick-off-on-a-list ones. So, post-dated to the end of the challenge, this is my list of counties visited and to be visited. So far I'm restricting myself to counties visited since the beginning of the challenge, but this might change nearer the end as I get desperate!

My geography's pretty terrible, so if anyone thinks I've been to any of these counties since 06/01/07 please let me know!

Laryngitis update
I've seen the doc, and been signed off sick for another week. Definitely on the mend, but still coughing and trying not to talk (obviously, this is a problem for me!).

The good news is that this means I can legitimately lie around watching the fourth plinth for a while longer!

And since my Friends List for the last few days has been full of illness and accident all far worse than mine, I'm feeling quite lucky to just have a crap larynx and no energy.

The doctor did say swine flu would have been preferable - it's only (so far) deadly to those who are already in poor health, so I'd have been OK and better by now. So if anyone at work has a go at me for being off for a fortnight, I can tell them that laryngitis is officially far worse than swine flu!

One & Other
Is anyone else watching the plinth?

The current chap is drinking tea and reciting poetry. Much more interesting so far than the panda with the phone.

It's vewwy vewwy quiet...
I still can't talk.

OK, I can a bit, but I'm not meant to. And I'm trying not to, because it's exhausting and leaves my throat feeling like I've been smoking half-a-dozen cigars. Even whispering is uncomfortable and dis-recommended by the doctor.

This would be fine if I had enough energy to get on with otherwise normal life, but actually all I'm up to doing is lying around. The last few days have largely been spent sleeping, drinking lots (non-alcoholic, before you ask), crocheting and listening to the radio. And vaguely surfing LJ - hurrah for netbooks and wireless networks, so I can do that from bed.

And right now I'm eating some get-well-soon chocolate from Sean WINOLJ. Very kind of him. It's a Wispa. Sarcastic bugger.

Now don't laugh, but...
...I can't talk.

This is because I have laryngitis. It was the quickest diagnosis ever, quick chat and one glance down the throat and the doc said what it was. I'm not to talk or exercise for days, preferably a week, maybe longer. Since my job basically involves talking and exercising, this could be a weird week.

Right now I barely have the energy to lie in bed. There's not much that isn't aching (I think my left shin isn't, but that's about it). I rather hope this stage doesn't last long!

OK, now to see if I can get comfortable enough to go back to sleep. Bah. I hate being ill.

Michael Jackson
Since I heard the news this morning I've been trying to work out how I felt about Michael Jackson's death. Then I read Mitch Benn's blog and realised he summed it up perfectly.

http://www.mitchbenn.com/blog/834/michael_jackson.html

"The Michael Jackson who thrilled and amazed the world has, let's face it, been gone for a long time. I'm not sure I can miss him anymore now than I already did."

It's still very sad though.

What did I miss?
Our internet connection is now back, having been down since Thursday. That's days and days of LJ to catch up on. So, what did I miss?

Eurovision Song Contest
Any one of these would have been better than any of last night's actual entries. I must admit, I can't remember the tune of a single one of them this morning.

Last Wednesday I...
...entered a 10km race for 13th June.

And the Robin Hood Half Marathon for 13th September.

And another half marathon for a fortnight later.

Help!

My only hope is that the entry forms get lost in the post...

Look, it's exciting to me, OK?
I am currently sitting in a service station cafe using the free WiFi with my new Aspire One. I realise this sort of stuff is old hat to everyone else out there, but it's the first time I've ever done anything like this so I thought I would record the occasion.

I've also just had the following conversation with the staff at Costa Coffee:

Me - What's in an Americano?
Them - An espresso, topped up with hot water.
Me - So why does it cost sixty pence more than an espresso?
Them - Er, that's probably for the water?
Me - OK, so what if I order an espresso but ask you to put it in a bigger cup and top it up with water?
Them - Er, we'll charge you for an espresso.
Me - I'll have an espresso then please, but in a big cup topped up with water.

Surely I can't be the only person who's spotted this anomaly?

Right, time to get back on the road. I may have to blog again for the sake of it next time I stop and find free WiFi. Don't worry, the novelty will no doubt wear off very soon.

Sadly Clement Freud has died. I hope he got points for speaking as the whistle went.

This is excellent:
Twitter switch for Guardian, after 188 years of ink

Some of my favourite lines include:
Currently, 17.8% of all Twitter traffic in the United Kingdom consists of status updates from Stephen Fry

and the historical events rewritten as tweets, such as:
"OMG Hitler invades Poland, allies declare war see tinyurl.com/b5x6e for more"; and "JFK assassin8d @ Dallas, def. heard second gunshot from grassy knoll WTF?"

Spring forward...
Guess who forgot the clocks went forward last night.

Guess who works on a Sunday morning.

Guess who got a call from work at what turned out not to be 7:30am after all, asking whether she'd forgotten about the clocks.

Still, it could have been worse. I could have remembered about the clocks, and lost an hour of sleep.

Google Earth
You've probably all heard this by now, but...

A year or so ago a teenager heard about Google Earth.

So he painted a cartoon phallus on his parents' roof.

They have only just noticed.

Initiative, creativity, drive, application and patience. This genuinely gives me great hope for the youth of today.

But is it art?
Firstly, we have a video using tilt-shift. This isn't animation, it's strange photography.

Bathtub IV from Keith Loutit on Vimeo.

Secondly we have James Falvey. Pop-art style, mostly of people in comedy and entertainment, and mostly including bad puns. Well worth a look.

Enjoy.
